WHITESTONE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Rep. Steve Israel has stepped in and called on the State Department to expedite travel documents to reunite a 4-year-old boy in Ukraine with his mother in New York.
As WCBS 880’s Mike Xirinachs reported, 4-year-old Michaylo Cuzman has been stuck in a dangerous area of Ukraine while his newly married mother has been living in Whitestone, Queens.
The boy hasn’t be able to get the necessary travel documents to be reunited with his mom, Xirinachs reported, and remains in Ukraine amid growing unrest.
“It has been the site of clashes and protests and demonstrations and it has been increasingly dangerous and unstable,” Rep. Israel said. “Just get it solved. Just resolve it. Don’t worry about the big debates in Congress later, just solve this problem.”
Natalia said she does all she can to comfort her frightened son by telephone.
“Just, you know, every day we are telling him that we are just will be soon together, just to stay safe,” she said.
Rep. Israel said he’s hopeful to win the boy’s release to the U.S. soon.
