Horse Sculptures By Scottish Artist Arrive In Bryant Park For Tartan Week
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – New York City is celebrating all-things Scottish.
Bag pipes welcomed the installation of two monumental sculptures of horses by Scottish artist Andy Scott in Bryant Park on Friday, WCBS 880′s Peter Haskell reported.
Titled “The Kelpies,” the two 10-foot-high steel horse heads are scaled down versions of a 100-foot-tall installation Scott created for a new park in Falkirk, Scotland.
Scott told Haskell the sculpture is “a celebration of the working horses of Scotland and the role they played in building society.”
He brought them to New York “to promote the country and to promote myself.”
“It’s a very expensive business bringing these guys here, so I’m hopeful one of you good New York people might commission me for something. But joking aside, yes it’s very nice,” Scott said.
Parkgoers love the sculptures, which will remain in Bryant Park through April 22.
“Absolutely beautiful,” said Anthony Lebron.
“I love this, I saw the pictures of the ones in Scotland which are 10 times as tall and I wish we could fit them in Manhattan,” said Randy Carter. “It’s like public art everywhere, it just reminds you to be human.”
“I think they’re beautiful, and I like the way they glisten in the sun,” one woman said.
“The Kelpies” are in the city for Tartan Week, which last year was a 20-day celebration.
“This year, thanks to The Kelpies in Bryant Park, it’ll last from March 19 – April 22,” Margaret Kennedy, President of the National Tartan Day New York Committee, stated on the NYC Tartan Week website.
Among the highlights of Tartan Week is the New York Tartan Day Parade along Sixth Avenue on April 5 and a lecture on Scottish Jews.
