WATCH: Twins Pull Prank On Mike Pelfrey, Have Him 'Call' Wichita St. Shockers
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- What good is a major-league clubhouse without the occasional prank?
Former Mets pitcher and current Twin Mike Pelfrey was the recent victim of a prank, and even manager Ron Gardenhire was in on it.
"Big Pelf," who pitched in Queens from 2006-2012, attended college at Wichita State University.
The men's basketball team -- which has since been defeated -- was a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. So Gardenhire called the veteran into his office and explained that the university's athletic department is looking for celebrities to pump the Shockers up as they embark on their quest to win a national championship.
Pelfrey was visibly nervous about the call, but he acquiesced and spoke to "the team."
The only problem? The men that he thought were college basketball players were in fact his teammates -- sitting 10 feet away.
The right-hander wasn't sure what to say, and he didn't exactly receive praise from his manager as the awkward call proceeded. Gardenhire's acting was masterful as he continually frustrated his starting pitcher.
"Sit your butt back down there," the manager said. "Where are you going? ... He's not the smartest guy from Wichita St. ... Hey, they don't need your life story. They want you to pump them up. Let's go ... That's all you got? That's all you got? Give them something, man!"
When Pelfrey realized he had been pranked, his reaction was simply priceless.
