NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police say an 87-year-old woman is dead after an apartment fire on the Lower East Side.

The fire was reported just before 1 a.m. Saturday in an apartment on Madison Street.

The 87-year-old woman was found inside the apartment after the fire was put out.

She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The woman reportedly suffered smoke inhalation while she was cooking, CBS 2 reported.

Neighbors said she was a nice, quiet woman who lived by herself.
