Residents Say NYC Is Best Place To Spend Memorial Day Weekend

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Who needs the Hamptons or the Jersey Shore?

As droves of people have left New York City for the Memorial Day weekend, those who stayed behind were enjoying a picture-perfect Sunday in a less-crowded, less-chaotic city, 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported.

"Everything is easier to do," one man said. "Restaurants are easier to get into."

Some New Yorkers said there's no point driving elsewhere for a summer holiday weekend.

"It's not worth the hassle," one woman said. "I don't know why everyone wants to leave such a great city."

"When the summer comes and everyone leaves town for the weekends, it becomes very lovely, quiet and peaceful," another woman said.

"They don't know what we have," added Jessica from Brooklyn. "They go elsewhere searching for something that we have right here in New York City -- the peacefulness, naturalness of nature."

While many headed out of town, Mike from Ringwood, N.J., did just the opposite -- coming into the city to ride his bike from lower Manhattan to Riverside Park.

"It's great," he said. "Sat around, enjoyed the sunshine, looked at the Statue of Liberty. Had a great time."
