Jersey City Elementary School Evacuated After Substance Sprayed Inside Classroom

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Jersey City elementary school was evacuated Wednesday morning after someone released what's believed to be pepper spray inside a classroom.

It happened around 9:45 a.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School when students in a sixth-grade class noticed an odor and began coughing.

Officials say the school was evacuated for about an hour and police, fire and hazmat units responded.

About 15 students and two teachers who came into contact with the substance were taken to the hospital as a precaution, CBS 2's John Slattery reported. One security guard was treated at the scene.

It was not immediately known who released the spray. Officials say they are now testing the substance.

The incident is under investigation.
