2 Dead, 1 Injured In Separate Newark Shootings

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two men are dead and a woman was injured in two separate shootings in Newark.

The shootings happened about a mile apart during a two-hour span on Friday afternoon, but it doesn't appear that the incidents are connected, according to Essex County authorities.

The first shooting occurred around 2:40 p.m. in the 100 block of Muhammad Ali Avenue. Authorities said 33-year-old Kareem Jones, of Irvington, was shot multiple times. Irvington was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

About two hours later, police found 20-year-old Jermaine Gamble in the street on the 200 block of South 8th Street. He was pronounced dead a short time later at University Hospital.

A woman was also wounded in the second shooting. She was also taken to University Hospital, but her injuries were not considered life-threatening. Her identity and further details on her condition were not disclosed.

Both incidents are being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
