Investigators Sweep Rikers Island; 12 Correction Officers Referred For Prosecution
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Investigators on Monday searched about 75 locations at Rikers Island Monday for drugs, contraband and weapons as part of a probe into violence and other criminality.
In a joint statement, the Departments of Correction and Investigation said the search began Monday afternoon at the George Motchan Detention Center at Rikers Island.
A law enforcement told 1010 WINS that 12 correction officers were also referred for prosecution as part of a larger investigation.
The allegations include drug trafficking, inmate assaults, evidence tampering and falsification of records, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.
The official said investigators searched inmate cells, common areas, locker rooms and about 100 correction officers entering and leaving the facility at shift change.
The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official could not discuss an ongoing investigation.
