NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The daughter of a New York City cab driver testified Thursday that her father once threatened to kill her after she ran out on an arranged marriage in Pakistan and then turned his wrath on the family of the man she called her true love, WCBS 880’s Irene Cornell reported.
The defendant, Mohammad Ajmal Choudhry, and his daughter, Amina Ajmal, both began weeping the second she first took the witness stand at his murder conspiracy trial. Once composed, she told a jury that they had a loving relationship.
Choudhry has pleaded not guilty to charges he arranged the killings last year of the father and sister of a man who helped his daughter flee the arranged marriage. Prosecutors at the trial in federal court in Brooklyn have likened the shooting deaths to so-called honor killings — the ruthless vigilantism against Pakistani women accused of disgracing their families.
