Actor Shia LaBeouf Arrested At 'Cabaret' Performance
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Actor Shia LaBeouf was charged and held by police late Thursday, after he was arrested at a production of "Cabaret" at Studio 54 for allegedly being disruptive.
As CBS 2's Andrea Grymes reported, LaBeouf was being held at the NYPD Midtown North Precinct late Thursday night.
LaBeouf was charged with criminal trespass and two counts of disorderly conduct.
He was escorted out of Studio 54, at 254 W. 54th St., in handcuffs while "Cabaret" was playing, sources said.
Two theatergoers told CBS 2's Grymes they saw LaBeouf in a ripped shirt a block away from the theater while they were walking to the show. They said LaBeouf was chasing after a man who appeared to be homeless.
The witnesses said they also saw LaBeouf stumbling inside the theater, in the bar, and feeding a woman a strawberry from her own plate.
"Honestly, I wasn't thinking of drunk or drugs. I was thinking he was working on a role, because it was that extreme," said witness Tina Marie Miller. "If we didn't know who he was, we'd assume he was a bum, literally, from how he looked and how he was acting."
Police told 1010 WINS and CBS 2 that LaBeouf was also smoking inside the theater and refused to stop.
Composer Benj Pasek issued a tweet which read in part, "Just saw Shia LaBeouf in handcuffs in tears surrounded by 6 police officers outside of CABARET the musical."
A press agent for the show only told CBS 2 that LaBeouf was "disruptive during act one and escorted out of Studio 54 at intermission."
LaBeouf, 28, had been cast in "Orphans" with Alec Baldwin last year, but a creative dustup between the pair led to LaBeouf's leaving the production before it even opened.
Ben Foster went on to replace LaBeouf in "Orphans," which closed in May of last year.
LaBeouf has also faced previous legal trouble for an assortment of incidents over the past decade. The incidents included an arrest for allegedly refusing to leave a Chicago Walgreens drugstore in 2007 – for which charges were later dropped – and a drunken driving arrest following a car crash in Los Angeles the following year.
LaBeouf was also taken into custody, but not charged, following a 2011 a fight with a patron at a Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles bar in which he was reportedly punched in the face.
Last year, LaBeouf was accused of plagiarizing his short film "Howard Cantour." He apologized via a series of tweets that critics said appeared to be lifted from other famous apologies.
This past January, LaBeouf made headlines for walking out of a news conference at the Berlin Film Festival, and later appearing with a bag over his head reading "I am not famous anymore."
LaBoeuf is known for many roles, including the "Transformers" movies.
