GREENBURGH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – There is a call to shut down an old gun range in Greenburgh after a bullet fragment grazed a nearby resident last week.

The woman was in her new housing development off Ardlsey Road near the Westchester Police Revolver and Rifle League when a bullet fragment grazed her leg, WCBS 880’s Sean Adams reported.

“We’ve confirmed that the fragment was from the shooting range,” Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner said.

Feiner wants the gun range to be shut down.

“This is not whether you are for gun control or against gun control, this is about gun safety,” Feiner said. “I don’t think a gun range should be located in a residential neighborhood.”

Feiner said he reached out to the state for guidance only to learn there are no regulations.

“I was stunned,” Feiner said. “There’s no inspections, they don’t need any approvals.”

The range is located near the Ardsley Middle School, playgrounds and the Sprain Brook Parkway. Feiner fears more people could get hurt.

“It’s very frightening for people,” Feiner said. “A bullet in the future conceivably could hit a child taking a bus, people in their backyards or people at the playground at the Ardsley Middle School.”

The Westchester Police Revolver and Rifle League is a private non-profit dating back to the 1940s. Despite its name, the organization is not affiliated with law enforcement.

The small range is nestled at the base of a sheer rock wall about 30 feet high and members are perplexed how a bullet fragment cleared that backstop, WCBS 880’s Sean Adams reported.

The group voluntarily ceased operations as police investigate.

It leases the property from Con Ed, which is also reviewing the matter.
