Spectators Surprised At Liberty State Park Fireworks Display

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Although the Macy's fireworks were moved to the East River this year, New Jersey residents had a spectacular show of their own at Liberty State Park.

As CBS 2's Lou Young reported, it was like a fireworks ambush as thousands of people looking out toward the Statue of Liberty were suddenly surprised by fireworks much closer.

"They're on both sides of us!" said Carol Starkey.

Two sets of Grucci fireworks erupted; one of them surprisingly in close range. You could hear and see the mortars fire from Liberty State Park and then burst overhead.

"Oh my God! I've never been this close," said Keylesha Edwards.

"(It's like they snuck up on us!) Exactly! It's like it's going to fall on us," said Yana Maginsky.

The amazing thing was they were not just two sets of fireworks, they were identical. Like a giant mirror in the sky, Young reported.

"It was amazing! One set over here, one set there and a third set over there beyond the buildings," said Akhil Chainani.

That third set of fireworks, which was actually the Macy's Fourth of July Spectacular, provided a silent backdrop to the cacophony of noise, light and smoke up close.

The finale literally shook your insides, Young reported.

"You can feel it in your heart, like a big subwoofer," Jack Bouchakjian said.
