HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Police on Long Island were looking Friday evening for a possible connection following the discovery of body parts in three different locations.

Detectives were back on the scene Friday after a severed arm was found in the yard of a Hempstead home on Stewart Avenue, just blocks away from where another arm was found by a resident on Webb Avenue earlier in the week.

“Who would do something like that? I still couldn’t believe it,” neighbor Adrian Boyd said Friday. “I’m still weirded out.”

“I was startled, I was shocked,” neighbor John McCargo added. “They smelled this weird odor coming from outside and there were also flies and bugs and stuff in the apartment they never had before, so that’s what made them search around the house.”

Both Suffolk and Nassau County police processed the scene, but Suffolk homicide detectives were taking the lead in the case to see if the remains belong to the dismembered torso that was found in a Bay Shore parking lot on Tuesday.

Those remains were found by two people who were walking to the Fire Island ferry terminal, police said.

Police sources said investigators believe the body may belong to a missing Brooklyn mother of four, Chinelle Latoya Browne.

The 27-year-old’s family reported her missing on Saturday and CBS 2 learned that distinct tattoos found on the torso in Bay Shore match those of Browne.

Her neighbors in Brooklyn said the last time they saw Browne, she was visibly upset following a dispute with her landlady just outside her apartment door on Sumpter Street, CBS 2’s Janelle Burrell reported.

“The lady came outside screaming at her,” said Browne’s neighbor, Michael Talbot.

“Her hair was all a mess and she put it in a ponytail. She walked back down the block, she got in a cab and nobody saw her again,” neighbor Anthony Smith added.

Detectives are trying to figure out where Browne went after she got into the livery cab and whether the human body parts found on Long Island are hers, Burrell reported.

Police sources told CBS 2’s Sonia Rincon that investigators talked with one of the woman’s landlords — the husband of the woman she was seen arguing with — and that he was cooperative.

Investigators were awaiting DNA test results.

“She’s a beautiful woman, don’t bother nobody,” said Talbot. “It’s a sad case.”

“It is a sad thing for the neighborhood,” Smith added.

On his Facebook page, the woman’s husband, Dale Browne, asks for prayers that she’ll come back alive. He lives in Guyana with their children, Rincon reported.

Meanwhile, as 1010 WINS’ Gary Baumgarten reported, children played in the street, and adults played cards on a table on the sidewalk across the street, from where Browne lived. They said many of the neighbors in the area do not know each other very well.

The Sumpter Street residents said they had heard about the body parts strewn across Long Island, but did not realize that the victim might have lived on the block.

Two lit candles were flickering Friday on the stoop of the apartment building that Browne calls home.
