East Flatbush Apartment Fire Leaves Man Dead

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Brooklyn man was killed in an apartment fire in East Flatbush early Sunday, authorities said.

Firefighters and police responded to a 911 call at 411 E. 49th St. just after 4 a.m. A 44-year-old man was pulled from the blaze and rushed to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The victim has been identified as Edzer Desir. He was a Haitian immigrant,1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

A friend of the victim said he dropped Desir off around 3:20 a.m. after going to a party together.

"At 3:20 sharp, and safe and sound," the man told Schuck. "That's the crazy part of it."

The investigation is ongoing.

The Red Cross is helping several other families that were displaced and lost everything, Schuck reported.
