SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A 3-year-old boy was accidentally shot Monday evening in a home in Smithtown, Long Island.

Suffolk County police were called shortly before 7 p.m. to a home on Devon Lane in Smithtown, police said.

The child had been wounded in the abdomen by a bullet, police said.

Police believe the gun may have accidentally discharged. It was not immediately learned whether the child or someone else had the gun, police said.

The boy was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, and later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

He was in surgery late Tuesday.

His injuries were considered non-life-threatening, authorities said.
