Michael Vick: Geno Will Be '10 Times Better' Than He Was Last Year

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Geno Smith is No 1. on the Jets' quarterback depth chart and, unexpectedly, he'll get the start for Gang Green in the preseason opener against the Colts on Thursday night.

The second-year player is technically competing with four-time Pro Bowler Michael Vick, but all indications are that it's Smith's job to lose.

Following an up and down rookie season that featured some brilliance as well as some growing pains, Smith is looking to cement himself as the quarterback of the future in his sophomore campaign.

Vick, who's certainly been around the block and knows a thing or two about this game, believes that Smith will turn a corner in 2014.

"He's going to do great," Vick said on Tuesday in regard to Smith. "He's going to be 10 times better than what he was last year, and I'm looking forward to it."

The offense looked underwhelming in this past weekend's intrasquad scrimmage, not scoring a touchdown. And while those games are hardly indicators of what's to come, head coach Rex Ryan is eager to see his young quarterback deliver against Indianapolis.

"I want to see some production," Ryan said. "I think we'll see it. I know (Smith) will have the command. Let's have the production, too."

Vick is expected to play at least one series with the starters on Thursday night, the coach said.

But no matter how badly the veteran wants another chance to lead an offense in this league, he can't help but keep saying positive things about Smith.

"You see guys around the league, around his age, having success and doing good things for their ballclub," Vick said. "And I think he wants to fall right into that echelon."
