NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police Commissioner Bill Bratton has alluded to the fact that investigators may be inching closer to making an arrest in the Brooklyn Bridge flag swapping incident last month.

“We think we have a pretty good idea of who was involved,” the commissioner said Friday on CBS This Morning.

When asked why there hasn’t been any arrests, Bratton said “Knowing is not proving. So when we have the proof, we’ll move.”

It was early in the morning on July 22 when the American flags that sit atop the Brooklyn Bridge towers were mysteriously replaced by whitewashed versions.

It wasn’t until several hours later that construction workers on the bridge noticed the swap.

Bratton said the NYPD has put exhaustive efforts into the investigation.

The commissioner also reiterated that they believe the incident was not terror related.

“Nothing of that nature whatsoever,” he said.

In the days following the incident, NYPD Deputy Commissioner John Miller visited the Brooklyn Bridge, climbing to the top of the towers to view the crime scene for himself.

Following the incident, the NYPD has been pouring over surveillance video taken from cameras on the bridge, interviewing construction workers, examining DNA evidence that was found at the scene as well as license plates of vehicles that were on the bridge at the time and cellphone transmissions from the bridge.
