NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — They’re ready for their close ups!
A pair of 9-week old kittens have won co-starring roles in the Broadway revival of “You Can’t Take It With You.”
The winners, Alfonso and Luis, were among 14 kittens from the Humane Society of New York that auditioned Monday at the Longacre Theatre.
The kittens’ role in the show is to sit on a desk for six and a half minutes in the opening scene of the Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy.
“We had the desk that the kittens have to sit on on stage, and a little bowl of food, and we had the actress who is going to be sitting with them and we used the press and media as our audience to see how they would react in front of a group of people,” animal trainer Bill Berloni told 1010 WINS.
Alfonso and Luis are a pair of grey and white littermates that came to the Humane Society at just two days old. They were brought in by someone who couldn’t take care of the litter after their cat had given birth, 1010 WINS reported.
Alfonso and Luis will stay in the show until they get too big.
“When the kittens outgrow their roles they will be adopted,” Berloni said. “Through the show, people who are interested in adopting them can fill out an application.”
The kittens will appear alongside Elizabeth Ashley and James Earl Jones in the production of the 1936 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. Previews start Aug. 26
The kittens are being coached by Berloni who also worked with Sandy in “Annie” and the dogs in “Legally Blonde.”
