New Haven Police Search For Gunman After Stray Bullet Kills Man In Basement

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in New Haven are asking the public for any information about a stray-bullet shooting that killed a man inside his home Sunday morning.

Darryl McNair had just celebrated his 58th birthday Saturday night, Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported. His friends had gone home, and McNair retired to his basement to play solitaire on his computer.

At 2 a.m. Sunday, several gunshots rang out in the neighborhood, authorities said. One of them penetrated a wall of the basement and struck McNair in the head, killing him, police said.

"Some guy with a gun outside this guy's house fired it recklessly and ended up killing a man," New Haven Police Officer David Hartman told Schneidau.

"Any homicide is tragic, but for a man sitting at home on his computer, it really hits home a little harder," Hartman said.

No arrest has been made. Hartman said while detectives canvass the neighborhood, police want to hear from anybody with any information about the shooter.
