49ers DE Ray McDonald Arrested On Domestic Violence Charges

SAN JOSE, Calif. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- San Francisco 49ers defensive end Ray McDonald has been arrested on domestic violence charges, police in northern California said.

San Jose police Sgt. Heather Randol said the 29-year-old player was taken into custody early Sunday after officers responded to a home in an upscale neighborhood.

McDonald was jailed on felony domestic violence charges.

He has been playing for San Francisco since he was drafted as a third-round pick in 2007.

San Francisco 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said in a statement Sunday that the team takes "such matters" seriously but is not commenting on the allegations involving McDonald without more information.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced tougher penalties last week for players accused of domestic violence.

In a letter to owners, Goodell wrote that under the new guidelines a first-time domestic violence offender would receive a six-game suspension, while a second offense would result in a lifetime ban.

The change came after the NFL took heat for suspending Baltimore Ravens star running Ray Rice for just two games after grainy video showed him dragging his then-fiancee Janay Palmer off a casino elevator in Atlantic City. The couple have since married.
