Cooler Summer Temps Cause Headaches For Some Jersey Shore Businesses

LONG BRANCH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- These are supposed to be the dog days of summer, yet the Tri-State area has seen such temperate weather that some Jersey Shore businesses may have actually suffered the consequences of many not-so-hot days.

As WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported, ice cream and cold drinks have been a tough sell along the Jersey Shore this season.

"I mean one 90-degree day in August, I mean we wait for those days," said Daniel Panero.

Panero owns the Stewart's and the Corner Cafe in Long Branch's Pier Village in addition to two vending carts along the boardwalk.

"Fast foods, hot dogs and hamburgers; so people tend to go to that when it's really hot days because they're on the beach and they want refreshments and they want ice cream and they want smoothies," he said.

But Amy Palaia, who runs the Molly and Zoey clothing store in Long Branch, said the cooler weather has worked in her favor as beachgoers looked for sweatshirts and beach cover-ups to stay warm.

"People still come to go to the beach and to shop and go to dinner and lunch, but no (the weather) hasn't affected us in any way," she said. "Actually it kind of helps because if it's not crazy hot then they come and shop more."
