NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A group of beachgoers got quite a surprise Tuesday while trying to beat the summer swelter at Rockaway Beach.

Thomas O’Callaghan told CBSNewYork.com he spotted a whale breaching at around 2 p.m. at Beach 128th Street in Belle Harbor.

It’s not the first time whales have been spotted off the coast of New York City this summer.

Just last week the Wildlife Conservation Society released a remarkable photo of a humpback whale breaching just six miles from the Rockaways.

Earlier this summer, CBS 2 reported more humpback whales are spending time in the region.
