Suffolk Makes Ronkonkoma Hub A Priority, Says It Will Help Reverse 'Brain Drain'

RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Saying Long Island's future depends on its ability to keep and attract young adults, Suffolk County has added the Ronkonkoma Hub as one of its economic development priorities.

The county will assist in the development of the residential and retail complex near the Ronkonkoma train station with the aim of creating an environment that young people desire, WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.

"It's important for the future of our region," Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. "If we are a region that cannot retain or attract young people, we are a region in decline."

Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay agreed the project is critical.

"This isn't a project that we should do; this is a project that we have to do," Lindsay said.

Other priority development projects are in Wyandanch and Huntington Station.

Bellone said they are "key to reversing the brain drain."
