YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- More than 100 students at Yonkers Middle School were taken to the hospital due to fumes that had permeated the building.

Yonkers Public Schools told 1010 WINS that 140 students were taken to the hospital to be evaluated. Authorities said some students suffered eye irritation.

The spokesperson did not believe any faculty members were taken to the hospital, 1010 WINS reported.

The middle school was evacuated at around noon Wednesday after the fumes were detected in the cafeteria. The source of the odor remains unclear, 1010 WINS reported.

Yonkers Middle School houses approximately 1,000 students.
