Queens Man Pleads Guilty In Deaths Of Wife, Two Children

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Queens father has admitted to killing his wife and their two toddlers before fleeing to Texas back in January.

Miguel Mejia-Ramos, 28, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Friday.

Prosecutors alleged Mejia-Ramos stabbed his wife Deisy Garcia to death, then hugged and kissed his two young daughters before setting them down on their bed and killing them too.

Garcia, 21, and her daughters -- 1-year-old Yaslin Mejia and 2-year-old Daniela Mejia -- were discovered in a bedroom of their Jamaica apartment by other household members on Jan. 19.

Authorities said detectives recovered four knives, a bent knife blade and a knife handle with what appeared to be blood on them at the scene.

Mejia-Ramos was arrested in Schulenburg, Texas several days later after authorities tracked his cellphone. Authorities believed he was trying to cross the border into Mexico, where he is a citizen.

Mejia-Ramos told detectives on a flight back to New York City that he killed the children because "he didn't have car seats to take them with him," Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in January.

The DA's office said Mejia-Ramos told investigators he tried to kill himself after the murders.

Brown's office said police have investigated Mejia-Ramos for domestic violence and that he and his wife were planning to separate before the murder.
