Four People Injured When School Bus Overturns In Princeton, N.J.

PRINCETON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Four people were injured when a school bus overturned in Princeton, N.J. Tuesday afternoon.

The incident took place on Lawrenceville Road in Mercer County just before 3 p.m.

According to police, a BMW struck the left front bumper of a Rick Bus Co. bus with its front end, causing the bus to flip over onto its right side.

The BMW spun around and sustained heavy front end damage, police said.  The bus also sustained heavy damage to its left front side.

After seeing the pictures, a mother told CBS Philadelphia she was grateful her daughter or another person wasn't killed.

Sandra Molder, a bus aide, was on her route Tuesday when she got the call her daughter, a driver at the same bus company, was in a serious accident in Princeton on Route 206.

"When I first talked to her she was crying a little bit," said the bus driver's mother Sanda Molder. "The bus looked terrible. She was lucky. She was blessed."

The bus was bringing students home from school. The bus driver, Veronica McKinney, 44, of Trenton, a 16-year-old student and 71-year-old teacher's aid, Geneva Smith, were transported to University Medical Center at Plainsboro.  Their injuries were considered to be non-life threatening.

"The BMW's front end struck the left front bumper of the bus. The bus, subsequent to impact, flipped over to its right side," said Princeton Police Sgt. Steven Riccitello. "One of the vehicles crossed over the center lines to create the impact. That's still under investigation."

The driver of the BMW, Justin Thomas, 26, of Morris Plains was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Molder said her daughter was still getting X-rayed late into the night.

"What she told me she was doing pretty good, she was in pain," Molder said.

No summonses had been issued late Tuesday and the investigation is continuing.
