Police: Man Charged In Connection With 13 Nassau County Church Burglaries

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police have made an arrest in a string of church burglaries in Nassau County.

William Hepworth, 48, is accused of stealing money and a P.A. system from 13 churches since October, police said.

In one incident, police said Hepworth pried open four poor boxes at St. Anne's Church in Garden City and took off with cash.

Hepworth was arrested Tuesday in the parking lot of an Ace Hardware store in Massapequa. Police said he had cutting pliers, a pry bar and a screwdriver on him at the time of his arrest.

He is charged with 13 counts of third-degree burglary and possession of burglar tools. Hepworth is expected to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
