American Museum of Natural History Exhibit To Spotlight Natural Disasters

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A new exhibit at Manhattan's American Museum of Natural History will explore the science of natural disasters including earthquakes, hurricanes and volcano eruptions.

The exhibit opening Saturday will include interactive features that will allow museum-goers to generate a virtual volcano or stand in the eye of a tornado.

There is also a table map of New York City depicting the approach of Superstorm Sandy, 1010 WINS' John Montone reported.

Museum President Ellen Futter said understanding the science behind natural disasters can help humans predict them and cope with them better.

She adds that studying natural disasters is more important than ever as the Earth's climate warms.

The exhibit is called Nature's Fury: The Science of Natural Disasters.

It will be on view at the museum on the Upper West Side until Aug. 9, 2015.
