Yankees Hand Out Thanksgiving Food Vouchers To Thousands In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Several thousand people lined up outside Yankee Stadium to get a voucher they could use at a local supermarket for a Thanksgiving meal.

About 100 people camped out overnight and lines were five blocks long Thursday morning for the giveaway.

One woman, named Terry, arrived around 5:30 a.m. and said the voucher means the world to her.

"It means that even in the darkest of times there's something to be thankful for and somebody who is out there to help me," Terry said. "That's how I get along and that's how life should be."

"I just want to say thank you to the Yankees," she added.

"It makes you feel good after all these years that they're saying, 'We see you and if we could do a little something to help you,' it's a big thing, especially around the holidays because a lot of people don't have," one woman, named Angela, said. "Just the $25, it may seem a little bit, but for somebody who has nothing it means the difference between them having a hot meal or not."

One man, named Frank, approached 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck, asking if he could send a message to the Yankees.

"Thank you, thank you very much and God bless you all," Frank said.

The Yankees gave out about 2,500 vouchers as part of their annual tradition to help those in need in the Bronx.

All of the vouchers, which can be redeemed at Bronx-based C-Town and Bravo supermarkets, were handed out within 45 minutes.
