Yankees GM Brian Cashman Sleeps On Street To Support Homeless Youth

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Yes, it was absolutely frigid.

But that didn't stop Brian Cashman.

The Yankees' general manager took part in the Covenant House's "Sleep Out" movement on Thursday night by sleeping on the streets of Manhattan.

The movement's goal is to raise awareness for homeless youth.

"I have no idea how any human being possibly can do it for one night, let alone weeks on end," Cashman said, according to the team's official website. "It's a disaster. There's no way to simplify it.

"That's why, obviously, for those who are less fortunate, if we can get people to raise funds here and contribute to Covenant House they've got programs to put people back on the right track and be a safe harbor."

This was the fourth year that Cashman slept on the street to support the cause. New York City Football Club chief business officer Tim Pernetti -- formerly Rutgers' athletic director -- also took part in the "Sleep Out" movement.

"Once you're in, you're hooked," Cashman said, according to the website. "You've got to see the great work these people are doing for people that just need a fighting chance."
