Authorities: At Least 2 Killed In Paterson House Fire

PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two people were killed when a fast-moving fire roared through a Paterson home Sunday morning, and authorities were searching for another person who also may have been killed.

Fire officials said the two-alarm fire on Union Avenue was reported around 4:40 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters tried to enter the home, but initially were forced back by heavy flames. One victim was found on the first floor, while the other was found on an interior staircase, apparently trying to get out, 1010 WINS' Derricke Dennis reported. A dog also died.

The names of the two victims have not been released. Information about the person authorities were looking for was not disclosed.

"It's bad," said a woman who watched as the victims' bodies were carried from the home. "Two people died. That's all we can say."

"A hard situation," another neighbor added.

The fire also spread to a neighboring home, causing some damage and displacing at least seven people.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
