FDNY Firefighters Providing New Winter Coats To Children In Need

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The city firefighters union is sponsoring a coat drive in Brooklyn.

The event begins at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Academy of Arts and Letters on Adelphi Street in Fort Greene.

The Uniformed Fire Officers Association is partnering with Operation Warm, an organization which has provided coats and jackets to nearly 2 million children nationwide, to give free new winter coats to hundreds of children of the Boys and Girls Club.

"The objective here is to give out coats to needy boys and girls," union president Jake Lemonda told 1010 WINS. "We saw a need here and we wanted to give something back."

Lemonda said members of the organization buy the coats.

"We take money from our organization and we purchase the coats," Lemonda said. "Basically, our members are purchasing the coats and we literally purchased hundreds of coats."
