Gov. Christie Serves Up Pre-Thanksgiving Lunch At Newark Soup Kitchen

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and his wife got into the holiday spirit Wednesday as they handed out turkey dinners in Newark.

The pair didn't let the winter weather stop them as they spent more than an hour plating and serving a pre-Thanksgiving lunch at the soup kitchen at St. John's Church.

Dozens of people lined up for hot turkey with all the fixings, hot soup and slices of pie.

The kitchen, which typically serves hundreds of meals each day, drew a smaller crowd due to the storm.

As WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, the Christie family is also planning its own Thanksgiving meal around a big table at their home in Mendham.

"Whoever our troopers are tomorrow, they'll be with us too, so it's 28 people, I think," he said.

Christie said the house specialty is his wife Mary Pat's turnips, which he said includes Romano cheese, cream cheese and butter.

This is the second Thanksgiving for Christie since his Lap Band surgery last year in an effort to lose weight. He said he did alright last year.

"The planning part is: the stuff that you really want the most, eat first," he said.

Otherwise, Christie said he plans to eat what he can and stop.
