PASSAIC, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Two people have been found dead and 12 others were poisoned by carbon monoxide at a warehouse-turned-recording studio in Passaic.

Blanco said a call was made to 911 around 1:30 p.m.

First responders found the victims on the second floor of an industrial complex at 61 Willet Street, which is divided up into recording studios, WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported.

Police told CBS2's Dave Carlin they were found in one of the 20 rooms used by musicians renting from Streets Rehearsal Studios.

"I want to thank the police department, fire, EMS and prosecutors for their fast search and rescue mission that was done, if it wasn't for their quickness there'd be more fatalities," the mayor said.

The Record newspaper reports that hazmat teams, fire departments, ambulances and a gas company were on the scene.

Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost said the sprinkler system was intact, as was the fire alarm system.

The fire chief says many know about smoke detectors, but some may not know about the importance of carbon monoxide detectors.

Those sickened were taken to local hospitals, including Saint Mary's Hospital. There is no word yet on their conditions.

The incident is currently under investigation.
