MTA Calls For Disciplinary Action In Queens F Train Derailment Back In May

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- An official report Friday said multiple track defects were to blame for a derailment on the F Train in Queens this past spring, which left 30 riders and two employees injured.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority report released Friday found that inspectors did not document and investigate a broken plate, fasteners and a deteriorated tie on the subway line.

The report said a combination of defects caused the May 2 derailment of an eight-car F train that caused $2 million in damage.

About 1,000 commuters were on board when six cars on the train went off the rails between the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue station and Queens Plaza.

The derailment led to a massive underground evacuation. Part of the rail broke when the train was traveling over it, officials said.

The report recommended disciplinary action against three maintenance supervisors and a track inspector.

Transit Workers Union Local 100 President John Samuelsen said in a statement the MTA report's recommendation for disciplinary action is scapegoating. He said the rail was defective.
