NYC Outward Bound High Schools Stage March To Turn In College Applications

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Several hundred New York City High school students are a step closer to college after mailing their applications amid cheers and high-fives.

The eight schools that are part of the NYC Outward Bound network staged their fourth annual college march Friday.

Seniors carried signs with slogans like "Proud to be College Bound" as they marched to their local post offices.

As 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported, there was much cheering on Tilden Avenue as 80 high school seniors from the Kurt Hahn School marched to the corner mailbox with applications in hand.

One student D'Auria spoke with will be the first in her family to go to college.

"They keep pushing me so that I can go to college and be successful. Even though it's just me going to college, they feel as if they're going to college as well so its a big thing," she said.

Student Mame Sylla came from Chelsea's James Baldwin School: A School for Expeditionary Learning.

She said it felt "amazing" to mail three college applications. She hopes to become a businesswoman.

Schools in the network incorporate elements of the Outward Bound philosophy such as teamwork and growth through outdoor adventure.
