Authorities: Smugglers Used SUV With Hidden Compartment To Transport Drugs Into L.I.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - An elaborate scheme to sell what prosecutors called poison on the streets of Nassau County in Mexico, police said.

District Attorney Kathleen Rice said the nine defendants either used airplanes or a special Dodge SUV with a hidden compartment inside the engine to get the drugs from Mexico to Long Island.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, the SUV was made to look like a family was on vacation because it had a kayak on the top and bicycle attached to the back. But inside that compartment, they hid millions of dollars' worth of heroin.

"Others were arrested who flew in from California, acted as mules, swallowing condoms or balloons of heroin and expelling them from their bodies in the Bronx apartment of one of our defendants," Rice said.

Rice says several million dollars' in heroin, as well as cocaine, ecstasy and anabolic steroids were sold via Craigslist.

Charges against the defendants include conspiracy and sale of a controlled substance.

At least one defendant faces a sentence of up to 40 years of convicted.
