Report: Wright Spoke To Slain NYPD Officer's Sons For Over 15 Minutes On Phone

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mets third baseman David Wright has a strong connection to the police community.

His father was an officer in Virginia, and Wright has participated in many NYPD and FDNY charity events.

So in light of the tragedy this past Saturday, when two NYPD officers were murdered in Brooklyn, the seven-time All-Star tried to lend a hand in any way he could.

On Wednesday, according to the New York Post, Wright called the sons of Rafael Ramos. Ramos was one of the police officers who was killed.

And it wasn't a brief conversation with Justin, 19, and Jaden, 13.

"He spoke to them for about 15-20 minutes, and I was told they were really excited to hear from him," a source told the newspaper. "He said it was one of the hardest things he's ever had to do, but he hoped it put a smile on their faces for a few minutes."

Wenjian Liu was the other officer who was shot and killed in the police car.

The New York Post also reports that Wright invited the two sons to Port St. Lucie, Fla., where the Mets hold spring training.

"With his background, he wanted to make sure it wasn't seen as a trivial gesture," the source told the newspaper. "But they are Mets fans and really appreciated it."
