Yankees Trade Shawn Kelley To Padres For Minor Leaguer Johnny Barbato

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Yankees have traded relief pitcher Shawn Kelley to the Padres for minor-league pitcher Johnny Barbato.

Barbato, 22, was a sixth-round pick of the Padres in 2010. In Double-A last season, the Miami native converted 16 of 18 save opportunities and pitched to a 2.87 ERA in 31 1/3 innings pitched.

Kelley, 30, made his major-league debut with the Mariners in 2009. The right-hander was traded to the Yankees prior to the 2013 season for Abraham Almonte.

He struggled for the Bombers last season, going 3-6 with a 4.53 in 51 2/3 innings pitched. He converted just four of seven save opportunities and surrendered five home runs.

The Yankees lost closer David Robertson to free agency earlier this month, and their bullpen currently consists of Chase Whitley, Dellin Betances, Justin Wilson, Esmil Rogers, Jose De Paula, Bryan Mitchell, Andrew Miller, Manny Banuelos, Danny Burawa, Branden Pinder, Jose Ramirez and Gonzalez Germen.

Some of those relievers will have to battle for spots on the 25-man roster during spring training.

Betances and newcomer Miller are expected to compete for the vacated closer's role.
