NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A police investigation is underway after a baby boy -- just 23 days old -- was found bruised and unconscious at his East Harlem home and later died.

Paramedics rushed over to the Washington Houses at 97th Street and Second Avenue Friday night after receiving a 911 call from someone on the ninth floor, CBS2's Andrea Grymes reported.

When police arrived they reportedly found the child, Deon McNeil, battered and bleeding in his brother's arms, 1010 WINS' Derricke Dennis reported.

Deon was pronounced dead at Metropolitan Hospital Center.

Neighbors surrounding apartment 9A, where the child was discovered, were stunned.

"That's horrific; that's unjust; that's something that shouldn't be happening," one neighbor said.

"I just left the ninth floor this morning, and I don't know...oh man," said another tenant in the building.

"It's horrible, it's horrible. It's heartbreaking," another neighbor said.

Deon's mother, 31-year-old Ebony McNeil, has been questioned by police while investigators wait for the medical examiner to determine the cause of death, Dennis reported.

The other children that were home at the time are now in their grandparents' care, Dennis reported.

So far, no arrests have been made.
