Long Island Man Helps Save Bedridden Neighbor From Burning Home

FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man sprang into action and helped save a 72-year-old disabled woman when her house caught fire in Farmingville.

Andy Carbone said he was just about to go to dinner with his family when his wife noticed a bright glow coming from across the street Thursday evening.

His neighbor's Arden Lane home was on fire.

"There was no time to think," Carbone told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall. "I had to kick the front door open, the heat was very intense at the front of the house."

Carbone said he sent his 16-year-old daughter to grab the fire extinguisher from their home.

"When she brought it back, I got to knock down about 95 percent of the fire," Carbone said.

He then went to the back of the house and helped save Carolyn Renee Prince, his 72-year-old bedridden neighbor, who is getting treatment at the hospital and will be OK, Hall reported.

"She is disabled and bedridden so she couldn't. I heard her crying out back of the house," Carbone said.

Police arrived within minutes and helped Carbone carry prince away from danger.

There were hugs for the hero and handshakes all around from Prince's overwhelmed family, CBS2's Jennifer McLogan reported.

"Thank God for my neighbors," Prince's daughter said. "They are fantastic and I'm so blessed, I feel so happy."

"No words in my vocabulary to thank him enough," her son-in-law said.

Carbone said he is not a hero, he just didn't want to see someone die when he knew he could help, Hall reported.

After the rescue Carbone answered his call for jury duty at district court.
