Man Charged After Allegedly Stabbing Woman, Being Shot By Police On LES

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man was charged Wednesday after being shot by police after allegedly stabbing a woman in a Lower East Side public housing development earlier this week.

Around 11:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26 – in the midst of the snowstorm that socked the area -- police were called to an apartment in the Vladeck Houses building at 338 Madison St., where they learned that a man had barricaded himself inside an apartment with a woman, police said.

The NYPD Emergency Service Unit began negotiating with the suspect, when they heard a woman inside calling for help and saying the suspect was stabbing her, police said.

Fearing a life-threatening situation, the ESU officers broke into the apartment and made contact with the 37-year-old man, who was allegedly holding a knife to the 40-year-old woman's neck, police said. The suspect then began stabbing the woman, prompting the officers to begin using an electroshock device to stop him, police said.

The electroshock device did not work, so an officer then fired five rounds at the suspect, police said.

The suspect – identified as Brian Quattrocchi of Brooklyn – was charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon Wednesday, police said.

Following the incident, he was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center in critical, but stable condition, police said. An officer involved in the incident was also treated and released from Bellevue after suffering tinnitus.

A knife was recovered at the scene, police said.
