Tips For Replenishing The Moisture This Cold Weather Is Sucking Out Of Your Skin

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – If all this cold weather has dried out your skin, there are many things you can do to help get the moisture back.

"Gets itchy, it cracks to the point on my feet even that it bleeds," Brooklyn resident Robert Klein said.

"Very parched, dry, chapped lips," Jennifer Grey of Manhattan said.

Dermatologist Dr. Monica Halem said keep it simple.

"You want to make sure you moisturize your lips constantly and that I like plain Vaseline," she said.

For your hands, use a moisturizer throughout the day, CBS2's Cindy Hsu reported. For overnight repair, wear cotton gloves to bed after you've moisturized. Slather your feet up then sleep with socks on, too.

During the colder months, you want to cut down on certain anti-aging products that you may normally use every day.

"During the wintertime, you want to back off on your glycolic, back off on your retinol," Dr. Halem said.

The same goes for long, hot showers that strip the oil from your skin. Keep showers lukewarm and short—10 minutes at the most.

"I tell people not to use so much product in their hair and not to use it on their scalp especially," Andrew Gould with NY Hair Co., said.

If you have dry patches, Gould said you can use Argan oil on those spots and can use an at-home deep conditioner to hydrate hair.

"Take it on your finger, just rub it into the scalp," he said.

Then, throw on a shower cap and leave it on for 30 minutes to two hours before rinsing out your hair.

When washing your face, go for a non-foaming cleanser.

"CeraVe, Neutrogena, Cetaphil, they're all very gentle, great to use in the wintertime," Dr. Halem said.

Dr. Halem said for body moisturizers, Aquafor, coconut oil and Vaseline are great.

Doctors also advise to wear sunscreen every day, whether it's raining or snowing. The sunscreen, which should be at least 30 SPF, should be applied after your moisturizer and before your make up.

Dr. Halem said look for sunscreen with zinc oxide and to cover up while outside to keep your skin looking and feeling great.
