Bratton: Bulletproof Glass In NYPD Cars Not Practical

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton says installing bulletproof glass in police vehicles is not a practical idea.

Bratton was asked about the possibility during a public hearing with some state senators Wednesday, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported.

The question came in response to the December ambush murders of two police officers sitting in their squad car in Brooklyn.

"We estimate to replace all glass in a vehicle, it would be about a $50,000 cost," Bratton said. "It also, in terms of the ability to roll windows up and down, is very problematic because of all the gear necessary -- those are very heavy windows."

Bratton, however, noted that the Los Angeles Police Department has installed reinforced doors so officers can stand behind them for protection.
