Students, Parents & Alumni Try To Save White Plains School
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A century-old school is set to close in White Plains, but there are some bids to save the institution.
Tears flowed as it was announced in the chapel that by year's end Good Counsel Academy High School will close.
The Sisters of the Divine Compassion can't afford to operate the school and they're looking to sell their 16-acre campus on North Broadway in White Plains.
Students, Parents & Alumni Try To Save White Plains School
Students, parents and alumni are trying to save the independent Catholic school.
Tim Finneran, whose wife and daughter are graduates, has put together a bid from a non-profit that would develop a part of the property and generate money that can be used to fund the school.
"Use some unused land right now and be able to raise some funds that could sustain the school, sustain the chapel, sustain the convent," Finneran told WCBS 880's Sean Adams. "We have an opportunity to improve that property so that the school can benefit and the system can benefit. But we want to do what is smart here as well as what is right."
Finneran said they put a fully-funded eight figure bid on the table, but they haven't received a response.
The Journal News reports the sisters are not commenting while the bids are being reviewed.
