'SNL' Celebrates 40th Anniversary With Star-Studded Special

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- "Saturday Night Live" made a move to Sunday night in celebration of its 40th anniversary and the night was a star-studded affair.

As 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported, arriving celebrities walked past a temporary street sign that said "Saturday Night Way."

Fans stood across West 49th Street in the freezing cold to catch a glimpse of the action.

"It's a huge thing. It's bigger than the Oscars to me," said one fan.

"It's a nice way to pay tribute to all the stars that I grew up with," said another.

Fans got to see a history of "SNL" just by who arrived: Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Amy Poehler, Will Ferrell.

And for many fans, like Suat from Queens, it's hard to beat the early years.

"My father had me watching 'SNL' too when John Belushi was on there, so I was a big fan," he said. "Cheeseburger, cheeseburger -- Dan Aykroyd, you can't forget that kind of stuff, it's classic."

"The SNL 40th Anniversary Special," was an extravagant three-and-a-half-hour self-tribute.

Everyone who has ever been an "SNL'' regular, guest host, musical guest or behind-the-scenes creative force was on the guest list, along with other bold-face names galore.

Guest appearances ranged from Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift, to Miley Cyrus, James Franco, Derek Jeter, Steve Martin, Fred Armisen, Eddie Murphy, Jerry Seinfeld, Kristen Wiig and Kerry Washington.
