Police: Shrapnel Strikes NYPD Sergeant In Foot After Officer Fires Gun At Dog

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An NYPD officer fired his gun at a pit bull and shrapnel hit his sergeant in the foot Tuesday night in Brooklyn, according the police.

The sergeant and a police officer were responding to a report of a dispute at 9720 Kings Highway in Brownsville around 10:30 p.m. when a pit bull came charging at them out of a sixth floor apartment, police said.

The officer fired his weapon and the sergeant's foot was fractured by shrapnel from the ricochet of the bullet, police told 1010 WINS. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he remains.

The pit bull was taken to Animal Care and Control where it was treated for a graze wound to his foot, police said.

The incident is under investigation.
