Report: Giants To Give Tom Coughlin Short Contract Extension

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Tom Coughlin won't have to worry about constant questions about his contract during the 2015 season.

According to the Daily News, the Giants are prepared to give their longtime head coach a short extension so that he won't be a lame duck entering the final year of his current deal. The exact number of years and compensation being discussed were not immediately known.

Coming off a tough 6-10 season the Giants had hinted that they were considering breaking from tradition and allowing Coughlin to enter the final year of his deal without an extension, but must have thought better of it.

Coughlin seemed pleased during a meeting with reporters on Thursday from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

"That part of it is underway," Coughlin said, hinting that a deal was in the works. "I don't think there's any big mystery. You don't have to be overly concerned about anything secretive. There's nothing to it, really."

Coughlin said an extension is just a formality, because if the Giants don't turn things around next season his job will almost certainly be in jeopardy. New York has missed the playoffs in five of the last six seasons, including three straight since winning Super Bowl XLVI.

"Security? Security? Thank you very much," Coughlin said. "There are 32 guys who coach one year at a time, and that's the way it is. I don't care how many years you have on your contract.

"The important thing is to be the head coach of the Giants," he added. "And everything else will take care of itself."

The Giants have the No. 9 pick in the upcoming draft and are reportedly around $18 million under the salary cap. They have several decisions to make on both sides of the ball, including how to fix a defense that struggled all of last season, ultimately leading to the firing of coordinator Perry Fewell.

Steve Spagnuolo, who won a championship as the Giants' defensive coordinator during the 2007 season, was hired to replace Fewell.

"There are areas on our football team, situationally, that have to improve. I am hoping the production will be a lot different," Coughlin said.
