American Kennel Club: French Bulldog Most Popular Pooch In NYC

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A best in show beagle? Fuhgeddaboutit.

New York City has a new top dog -- the French bulldog.

The American Kennel Club announced Thursday that the flat-faced, bat-eared breed was the city's most popular in 2014. The French bulldog displaced its cousin the bulldog in the top spot.

Labrador retrievers, German shepherds and golden retrievers round out the top five. The Rottweiler was sixth, replacing the Yorkshire terrier. It dropped to eighth.

The rankings reflect newly registered dogs, mostly puppies.

New Yorkers differ a bit from the rest of the nation when it comes to favorite breeds.

Nationally, Labs retained the number-one spot for a record 24th year.

The bulldog is fourth, its highest ranking ever. The Frenchie is ninth, breaking into the top 10 for the first time since the decade of the 1910s.
