Environmentalists, NYC Officials Call On Gov. Cuomo To Nix Natural Gas Terminal

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Officials and advocates are begging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to block a natural gas terminal they say would be too close to New York Harbor.

As WCBS 880's Alex Silverman reported, Liberty Natural Gas says the deep water terminal 19 miles off Jones Beach would bring more gas to the area during peak times, and bring heating prices down.

But advocates and lawmakers from both sides of the isle say the danger just isn't worth it.

"Imagine you have a spill there, you know. Imagine that," said City Councilman Donovan Richards.

Richards heads the environmental protection committee.

"This would be very close to the communities of Long Beach, to the Rockaways, to JFK in particular," Richards said.

State Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos is also against the project, which the Coast Guard is reviewing, Silverman reported.

The lawmakers are pushing Cuomo to stop the gas line like he did with fracking in the state. So far, the governor has not taken a side on the issue.
